Amendment to Passport Rules

On 1st March 2025, the Centre amended the Passport Rules, making birth certificates the only accepted proof of date of birth for applicants born on or after 1st October 2023.

  • Revised Proof of DOB Requirement: Under the Passports (Amendment) Rules 2025, only birth certificates issued by authorized bodies will be accepted for applicants born on or after 1st October 2023.
  • Accepted Authorities: The birth certificate must be issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, the Municipal Corporation, or any authority empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
  • Alternative Documents for Others: Applicants born before 1st October 2023 can continue to submit other documents such as a driving licence, PAN card, Voter ID, or school leaving certificate as proof of date of birth.
  • Official Notification Issued: The government has formally issued a notification amending the Passport Rules of 1980 to enforce the change.
