On 3rd April 2025, the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill after a 12-hour intense debate, with the government defending the changes against opposition claims of constitutional encroachment and attacks on minority rights.

  • The bill was adopted by 288 votes in favor and 232 against, with BJP securing support from its secular allies.

Key Highlights of the Bill

  • Changes in Waqf Council & Boards: The Bill restructures the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards to include non-Muslim members.
  • Survey Authority Revision: The Survey Commissioner has been replaced by the Collector, who will now have the power to conduct waqf property surveys.
  • Ownership of Government Property: Any government property previously declared as waqf will cease to be waqf, and the Collector will determine ownership.
  • Legal Appeals: The finality of the Waqf Tribunal’s decisions has been revoked, allowing for a direct appeal to the High Court.
