Shaktikanta Das Appointed as PM’s Principal Secretary-II

On 22nd February 2025, former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das was appointed as Principal Secretary-II to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strengthening the PMO’s financial expertise amid global economic uncertainties.

  • The appointment was announced by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, confirming Mr. Das’s new role in the Prime Minister’s Office.
  • Mr. Das served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2018 to 2023, overseeing key financial decisions during the COVID-19 crisis.
  • His appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance financial management expertise in the PMO, given the current geo-economic challenges.
  • A 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, Mr. Das brings extensive experience in economic policymaking and governance.
  • He will be working alongside the existing Principal Secretary-I, P.K. Mishra, who will continue in his position.
