India Observes World Heritage Day

  • 18 Apr 2025

On 18th April 2025, India commemorated World Heritage Day by emphasising the protection of cultural and natural heritage in the face of rising threats from disasters and conflicts.

  • The 2025 theme, “Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 years of ICOMOS Actions” reminds us that preserving our past is key to protecting our future.
  • First proposed by International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and adopted by UNESCO in 1983, World Heritage Day seeks to honour and safeguard monuments, sites and the individuals who work to preserve them.
  • India ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1977, aligning with global efforts to identify and conserve sites of outstanding cultural and natural significance.
  • With 43 World Heritage Sites and 62 on the Tentative List, India continues to strengthen its global heritage footprint, most recently with the inclusion of Assam’s Moidams in July 2024.
