Justice B.R. Gavai Recommended as Next CJI

On 16th April 2025, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna formally recommended Justice B.R. Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India ahead of his retirement on May 13.

Justice Gavai's recommendation follows the Memorandum of Procedure which mandates the outgoing Chief Justice to suggest a successor to the Law Ministry.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985, and rose through the ranks in the Bombay High Court.
Elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai is next in line based on the seniority principle and is expected to serve until November 23, 2025.
