On 12th February 2025, Greece’s parliament elected former speaker Constantine Tassoulas as the country's new president, despite protests over his role in handling a 2023 train crash inquiry.

  • Tassoulas, 66 years old and a veteran politician, won 160 votes in the 300-seat parliament, securing the largely ceremonial role.
  • His election has sparked public outcry, as protesters blame him for failing to push for a political investigation into Greece’s deadliest rail disaster.
  • Tassoulas, who has served as culture minister and deputy defense minister, will replace Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece’s first female President.
