On 31st January 2025, astronaut Sunita Williams set a new record for spacewalking time, surpassing the previous mark held by Peggy Whitson.

  • Sunita Williams broke the spacewalking record by surpassing Peggy Whitson’s total spacewalking time of 60 hours and 21 minutes, as confirmed by the International Space Station (ISS) on X.
  • The spacewalk was part of Expedition 72 and began at 8 a.m. EST, marking the 92nd US spacewalk.
  • Williams, wearing a suit with red stripes, was joined by fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, who wore an unmarked suit, on his fifth spacewalk.
  • The spacewalk, expected to last six and a half hours, contributed to the ongoing mission of Expedition 72, which began on September 23, 2024.
