India Gate Illuminated for World NTDs Day
- 31 Jan 2025
On 30th January 2025, on World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, India Gate shined in purple and orange to raise awareness about NTDs and emphasize the global effort to combat them.
- The lighting of India Gate marks a global campaign to highlight the significance of tackling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) worldwide.
- The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized the event to showcase India’s progress in fighting NTDs, with particular attention to Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) and Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL).
- Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is a debilitating disease that threatens the lives of 404 million people in India, leading to painful body enlargement and severe disability.
- Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), also known as Kala-Azar, can cause malnutrition, severe weakness, and loss of working capacity, severely affecting affected communities.
- India has made significant strides in reducing the incidence of these diseases through awareness programs, prevention, and treatment efforts.
- The focus on these diseases serves to remind the world that NTDs are preventable and treatable, and there is a need for increased funding and resources.
