Uttarakhand Becomes First Indian State to Implement UCC
- 27 Jan 2025
On 27th January 2025, Uttarakhand officially implemented the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a landmark reform aiming to ensure uniformity in personal civil matters across caste, religion, and gender lines.
- Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the UCC will be effective in Uttarakhand starting January 27, 2025, marking a historic first in independent India.
- The UCC seeks to unify personal laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession, eliminating discrimination based on caste, religion, or gender.
- The rules of the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, have been approved, and officials have been trained for its proper implementation.
- The Act mandates registration of all marriages occurring after its enforcement within 60 days, with provisions to register earlier marriages under certain conditions.
- Personal laws for Scheduled Tribes and specific protected communities are excluded from the Act’s purview to respect cultural autonomy.
