New Projects for India’s Fisheries Sector

On 6th January 2025, 50 projects worth Rs. 50 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) were inaugurated in Guwahati, Assam, to boost fisheries infrastructure in the North Eastern Region (NER).

  • Organic Fisheries Cluster: India’s first organic fisheries cluster launched in Soreng, Sikkim, promoting ecological fish farming aligned with organic practices. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to support infrastructure and Fish Farmer Producer Organization (FFPO) formation.
  • Cluster-Based Approach: PMMSY’s model enhances competitiveness, addresses value chain gaps, and fosters regional-specific fisheries clusters, including freshwater and ornamental fisheries.
  • Investment in NER: Rs. 38.63 crore allocated to NER projects under PMMSY, creating 4,500+ employment opportunities.
  • Production Growth: Inland fish production in NER rose from 4.03 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 6.41 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, aided by advanced technologies like Biofloc and RAS.
  • National Contribution: India’s fisheries initiatives since 2015 total Rs. 38,572 crore, positioning the country as the world’s second-largest fish producer and key contributor to aquaculture and shrimp exports.
