India's Banana Exports Surge Tenfold
- 31 Dec 2024
According to Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India’s banana exports have increased tenfold over the past decade, with plans to reach $1 billion in exports within five years.
- India has seen a significant growth in banana exports, jumping from $176 million in 2022-23 to $300 million in 2023-24.
- The country’s global market share in banana exports has grown from 0.21% in 2013 to 1.74% in 2023.
- The recent trial shipments to the Netherlands via sea routes are expected to unlock new markets, including Russia, as a key importer.
- The shift to sea transport, currently a costly air transport-dependent sector, is expected to reduce costs and boost export volumes.
- APEDA is working on developing sea transport protocols for bananas and other fruits like mangoes, pomegranates, and jackfruit.
- Government initiatives, including financial support, modern farming techniques, and improved infrastructure, have been key to the growth of banana exports.
- States like Uttar Pradesh are prioritizing banana cultivation under the One District One Product initiative, enhancing production in regions like Purvanchal and Awadh.
