New Chairperson of UN Justice Council

In December 2024, former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Madan B. Lokur, was appointed as Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council for a term ending November 12, 2028.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced Justice Lokur's appointment on December 19, 2024, highlighting his role as head of the council.
The Internal Justice Council comprises five members, including Justice Lokur, along with distinguished jurists and representatives from Uruguay, Australia, Austria, and the United States.
In 2019, he became the first Indian judge appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji, serving on its non-resident panel.
His expertise and leadership have been recognized internationally, marking significant contributions to justice and governance.
