On 12th December, 2024, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh, 18, defeated China's Ding Liren in a dramatic final to become the youngest-ever world chess champion, securing the title in a 14-game match.
- D Gukesh clinched the world chess championship with a decisive win in the 14th and final game, securing the required 7.5 points over Ding Liren's 6.5.
- The high-stakes match witnessed Gukesh delivering a victory in classical time control after 58 moves spanning four hours.
- Before his historic triumph, the youngest world chess champion was Garry Kasparov, who won the title at age 22 in 1985.
- Gukesh's achievement makes him the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand, a five-time champion, to claim the global title, last held by Anand in 2013.
