On 11th December, 2024, the World Health Organization released its annual World Malaria Report, highlighting significant progress in combating malaria globally while addressing challenges in high-burden regions like Africa and South-East Asia.

- India and Indonesia Lead Malaria Cases in the Region: India accounted for nearly half of all malaria cases in the WHO South-East Asia Region in 2023, with Indonesia contributing just under one-third.
- Significant Reduction in Malaria Deaths: Malaria deaths in the region fell by 82.9%, from 35,000 in 2000 to 6,000 in 2023, driven by advancements in prevention and treatment.
- Decline in Malaria Incidence in South-East Asia: Estimated malaria cases in the South-East Asia Region dropped by 82.4%, from 22.8 million in 2000 to 4 million in 2023.
- India’s Contribution to Regional Progress: India reported a 93% reduction in malaria incidence since 2000, achieving 17.7 million fewer estimated cases and driving regional progress.
- Achievements in Other Countries: Timor-Leste and Bhutan reported zero indigenous malaria cases in 2023, reflecting progress in low-burden countries.
- Challenges Persist in High-Burden Countries: The African Region accounted for 95% of global malaria deaths in 2023, with many at risk lacking access to necessary prevention and treatment tools.
