  • 09 Dec 2024

In December 2024, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC) established the International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience to enhance the security and functionality of global submarine cables.

  • The advisory body consists of 40 members, including Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Telecom Secretary of India, and is co-chaired by Nigerian and Portuguese representatives.
  • It will convene twice a year to discuss international best practices, improve telecommunications infrastructure, and enhance cable resilience.
  • The first virtual meeting is scheduled for December 12, with a physical meeting planned for February 2025 at the Submarine Cable Resilience Summit in Abuja, Nigeria.
  • India hosts 17 international subsea cables across 14 landing stations, with a combined lit capacity of 138.606 Tbps and an activated capacity of 111.111 Tbps as of 2022.
  • Submarine cables are critical to global communication, carrying 99% of internet traffic and supporting vital sectors like commerce, finance, and education.
