Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2023

On 19th November 2024, the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2023 was conferred on Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad for their contributions to fostering peace between Israelis and Palestinians through music and dialogue.

  • Daniel Barenboim, an Argentine-born classical pianist and conductor, was recognized for his lifelong work using music as a tool to promote harmony in the Middle East, particularly between Israelis and Palestinians.
  • Ali Abu Awwad, a Palestinian peace activist, was honoured for his dedication to non-violent efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and promoting peaceful coexistence.
  • The award was presented on Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary during a virtual ceremony attended by prominent figures, including Sonia Gandhi, M Hamid Ansari, Shivshankar Menon, and Justice T S Thakur.
  • The awardees were selected by a distinguished jury led by former Chief Justice of India T S Thakur, recognizing their tireless efforts to promote peace and unity in the region.
