Meta Launches ‘Scam se Bacho’ Safety Campaign

On 17th October, 2024, Meta, in collaboration with the Indian government, launched a two-month-long campaign called ‘Scam se Bacho’ to educate citizens on online safety and protect them from the growing menace of cyber fraud.

  • Meta’s new initiative aims to curb the rising cases of cyber fraud in India by increasing awareness about online scams and providing safety tools to internet users.
  • The ‘Scam se Bacho’ campaign is a collaborative effort between Meta and key government bodies like the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
  • With over 900 million internet users, India has witnessed rapid digital growth under the Digital India initiative, which has also made the country a global leader in UPI transactions.
  • The surge in internet usage has been accompanied by rising cyber fraud cases, with 1.1 million incidents reported in 2023, prompting a call for stronger security measures by the Prime Minister.
  • Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju emphasized the importance of the campaign as a national movement, empowering citizens with knowledge and tools to protect themselves from cyber threats.
  • Meta’s global expertise in digital safety will be utilized to help Indian citizens navigate the online space securely, ensuring that India’s digital progress is supported by enhanced cyber vigilance.
