In October, 2024, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna for appointment as the 51st Chief Justice of India, with the process initiated ahead of Chandrachud’s retirement on November 10.

  • Justice Khanna was part of landmark cases, including the grant of interim bail to former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and the ruling upholding the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • He is set to succeed Chief Justice Chandrachud in accordance with the seniority norm and will serve until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
