On 4th October 2024, the Maharashtra cabinet approved the establishment of a green integrated data centre park, attracting Rs. 1.60 lakh crore in investments to enhance the state’s technological infrastructure.

  • The Maharashtra government amended its Information Technology and Information Technology Support Services Policy 2023 to include incentives for green integrated data centre parks, aiming to promote sustainable growth in the data storage sector.
  • The state is expected to attract global companies and multinational corporations to invest approximately USD 20 billion, positioning Maharashtra as a leader in the data centre sector.
  • The green integrated data centre parks will create 500 direct jobs for highly skilled experts and 3,000 indirect employment opportunities for individuals with modern technological qualifications.
  • These data centres are essential as demand for data storage surges with advancements in artificial intelligence, while the initiative aligns with India’s goal to become carbon footprint-free by 2070, addressing environmental concerns.
  • The new policy mandates that the green integrated data centre parks must have a minimum capacity of 500 MW and a fixed capital investment of Rs 30,000 crore to qualify for incentives, which will be provided over 20 years.
