On 30th September 2024, BharatGen, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing public service delivery and enhancing citizen engagement through generative AI, was inaugurated in New Delhi.

BharatGen represents India's commitment to advancing homegrown technologies, positioning the country as a global leader in generative AI, akin to its innovations in UPI and other sectors.
It is the world's first government-funded Multimodal Large Language Model project, focusing on developing AI systems in various Indian languages.
Spearheaded by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), BharatGen will create generative AI systems capable of producing high-quality text and multimodal content.
The project will be executed by the TIH Foundation in collaboration with several academic partners, including IIT Bombay, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIT Kanpur.
BharatGen aims to deliver AI models as a public good, prioritizing India's socio-cultural and linguistic diversity, and addressing national needs such as social equity and cultural preservation.
