On 30th September 2024, BharatGen, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing public service delivery and enhancing citizen engagement through generative AI, was inaugurated in New Delhi.

  • BharatGen represents India's commitment to advancing homegrown technologies, positioning the country as a global leader in generative AI, akin to its innovations in UPI and other sectors.
  • It is the world's first government-funded Multimodal Large Language Model project, focusing on developing AI systems in various Indian languages.
  • Spearheaded by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), BharatGen will create generative AI systems capable of producing high-quality text and multimodal content.
  • The project will be executed by the TIH Foundation in collaboration with several academic partners, including IIT Bombay, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIT Kanpur.
  • BharatGen aims to deliver AI models as a public good, prioritizing India's socio-cultural and linguistic diversity, and addressing national needs such as social equity and cultural preservation.
