On 13th September, 2024, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted preliminary trials of the Indian light tank Zorawar, designed for high-altitude deployment.

Key Points

  • Exceptional Field Trial Results: Zorawar demonstrated exceptional performance during trials in desert terrain, achieving all operational objectives, including firing accuracy on designated targets.
  • Indigenous Development Efforts: The tank was developed by DRDO’s Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) with Larsen & Toubro, along with contributions from Indian MSMEs.
  • Step Toward Self-Reliance: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the trials as a major milestone for India’s goal of achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies.
  • Strategic Necessity: The need for a light tank was realized during the 2020 India-China standoff in Ladakh, with Zorawar designed for easy deployment at 15,000 feet in challenging terrain.
  • Future Defence Capabilities: With successful trials, Zorawar is set to bolster India's military strength in high-altitude regions, advancing the nation’s self-reliant defence ambitions.
