Centre for Active Mobility

  • 06 Sep 2024

In September 2024, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Urban Morph Bengaluru announced that they are establishing a pioneering Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Active Mobility to enhance non-motorised transport systems in Indian cities.

  • The IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab and Urban Morph have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop the CoE, focusing on cycling and walking infrastructure.
  • The CoE will create a collaborative ecosystem involving stakeholders, think tanks, and citizen groups to make public spaces accessible, safe, and disability-friendly for all.
  • The initiative aims to address first and last-mile transportation challenges and improve urban living quality by fostering research, planning, and evaluation of active mobility solutions.
  • The CoE will act as a central resource for high-quality research and planning, supporting cities across India in meeting health, transportation, and climate goals.
  • The centre will employ a living lab approach to pilot solutions in cities such as Pune, Guwahati, Indore, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, and will engage with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for support.
