MBB Airport

On 5th September 2024, the Centre announced that it will soon declare Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) airport as an international airport, along with reopening two defunct airports in Tripura.

  • The Centre is set to grant international status to the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport, marking a major boost for the region’s connectivity.
  • The Tripura government had previously allocated Rs 3.85 crore to the Airports Authority of India to establish international facilities at the MBB airport.
  • The MBB airport, inaugurated with a new terminal by Prime Minister Modi in 2022, is currently the second busiest in the Northeast after Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
  • The airport’s new terminal, part of a Rs 500 crore project, will significantly expand capacity, handling 1,200 passengers at a time, compared to the current limit of 500 passengers.
  • The airport was originally built as a military airstrip in 1942 on land donated by Maharaja Bir Bikram, after whom it was renamed in 2018.
