President Sanctions Formation of 23rd Law Commission
- 04 Sep 2024
On 3rd September 2024, President Droupadi Murmu approved the formation of the 23rd Law Commission of India, which will operate from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2027.
- The 23rd Law Commission will consist of a full-time Chairperson, four full-time members (including a Member-Secretary), and additional ex-officio and part-time members.
- The commission's primary role is to review and propose legal reforms to enhance the Indian legal system.
- The 22nd Law Commission's term ends on August 31, 2024, and has been operating without a chairperson for several months, affecting the submission of crucial reports.
- Key reports, including those on the Uniform Civil Code and simultaneous elections, are pending submission due to the lack of a chairperson.
- Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, who resigned in March 2024 after a 17-month tenure, left the commission without leadership, further delaying report submissions.
