Kerala Launches India's First Digital Court

On 16th August, 2024, Kerala inaugurated India’s first digital court, ‘24/7 ON Court,’ marking a significant step in integrating technology into the judicial system.

  • The ‘24/7 ON (Open and Networked) Court’ was inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the Kerala High Court, focusing initially on cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
  • This digital court will handle the entire process of cases online, from petition filing to judgment delivery, and aims to streamline the judiciary system.
  • The new initiative addresses the high volume of cheque dishonour cases, which make up approximately ten percent of pending cases, highlighting its importance.
  • Another introduced technology is the We-Solv Virtual Solution Maker system, enabling online discussions and negotiations for Motor Accident Claims Tribunal cases.
  • A model digital courtroom and digital district courts will be established across all 14 districts of Kerala, enhancing ICT infrastructure within the judiciary.
  • Special courts dedicated to handling cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the BUDS Act were also inaugurated in Ernakulam and Alappuzha, respectively.
  • The event also saw the inauguration of a new security-cum-facilitation block and a CCTV surveillance system at the high court complex.
