On 16th August, 2024, Thailand's Parliament elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country's new prime minister, marking her as Thailand’s youngest and second female leader.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest daughter of ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was elected as Thailand's new prime minister on Friday.
At 37, Paetongtarn is Thailand’s youngest prime minister and the second female to hold the office, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
The election of Paetongtarn comes after the removal of the previous prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, by the Constitutional Court for an ethics violation.
Paetongtarn's public political career began in 2021, and she has since been a key figure in Pheu Thai, becoming its leader last year.
The political landscape has been turbulent with recent court rulings, including the dissolution of the Move Forward party and restrictions on its leader, Pita Limjaroenrat.
