Trial Run on World’s Highest Chenab Rail Bridge

On June 20th, 2024, Indian Railways conducted a successful trial run on across the newly constructed World’s highest Chenab Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir.

Key Points

  • It is standing at a staggering 359 meters (about 1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, surpassing the height of the Eiffel Tower by approximately 35 meters.
  • The 1,315-meter-long bridge is a crucial component of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
  • The bridge is built between Sangaldan in Ramban district and Reasi.
  • The first phase of the project, covering the 118 km long Qazigund-Baramulla section, was inaugurated in October 2009. Later, the 18 km long Banihal-Qazigund section was inaugurated in June 2013 and the 25 km long Udhampur-Katra section in July 2014.
  • The project aims to integrate the Kashmir Valley with India’s expansive railway network.
