On June 11th, 2024, Rajeev Taranath, the renowned sarod maestro of international repute passed away in Mysuru in Karnataka after a prolonged illness.

Key Points

  • Born on 17th October 1932, he gave his first public singing performance at the age of nine.
  • After obtaining his Doctorate in English Literature, taught English literature at Aden University in the 1980s
  • Served as the head of the Indian music programme at the California Institute of the Arts from 1995 to 2005.
  • He has composed music for many internationally acclaimed Kannada films including Samskara, Kanchana Sita and Kadavu.
  • He is the recipient of Padma Shri award in 2019. He is also honoured with Central Sangeet Natak Academy award, the state Sangeet Vidwan award, Chowdiah award, Kannada Rajyotsava Award given by Karnataka state Government.
