India and UAE Discuss Migration and Mobility Agreements

On 14th May, 2024, India and the United Arab Emirates convened the fifth meeting of the Joint Committee on Consular Affairs (JCCA) in New Delhi, focusing on migration and mobility agreements and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.

  • The fifth JCCA meeting addressed various consular issues including labour, visa, migration, citizenship, and extradition, emphasizing mechanisms to strengthen coordination and cooperation between India and the UAE.
  • The UAE provided insights into measures taken to ensure the welfare of Indian workers within its borders, reflecting both sides' commitment to citizen-centric consular mechanisms.
  • Discussions also encompassed visa facilitation to promote greater people-to-people exchanges and the expedited conclusion of agreements related to migration and mobility.
  • Both nations highlighted the importance of regular statistical exchange and sharing best practices in consular matters to enhance bilateral cooperation.
  • The India-UAE relationship, upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2017, spans various sectors including political, economic, trade, defence, cultural, technological, and energy, underpinned by robust people-to-people ties.
  • Currently, the UAE hosts over 3.5 million Indian citizens, highlighting the significance of consular cooperation between the two nations.
