David Salvagnini

On 14th May 2024, NASA announced the appointment of David Salvagnini as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), expanding his role from Chief Data Officer.

David Salvagnini will lead NASA's responsible use of AI in space and on Earth.
His responsibilities include strategic vision, development, and risk management of AI tools.
Salvagnini will continue collaboration with government agencies, academia, and industry partners.
He joined NASA in June 2023 after a 20-year tenure in technology leadership.
Salvagnini's background includes service in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Air Force.
Prior to his appointment, Kate Calvin served as NASA's acting responsible AI official.
NASA utilizes AI for various tasks, including mission support, data analysis, and autonomous spacecraft operations.
