On 14th May 2024, NASA announced the appointment of David Salvagnini as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), expanding his role from Chief Data Officer.

• David Salvagnini will lead NASA's responsible use of AI in space and on Earth.
• His responsibilities include strategic vision, development, and risk management of AI tools.
• Salvagnini will continue collaboration with government agencies, academia, and industry partners.
• He joined NASA in June 2023 after a 20-year tenure in technology leadership.
• Salvagnini's background includes service in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Air Force.
• Prior to his appointment, Kate Calvin served as NASA's acting responsible AI official.
• NASA utilizes AI for various tasks, including mission support, data analysis, and autonomous spacecraft operations.
