Assam Repeals Muslim Marriages Act

On 23rd February, 2024, Assam repealed the Muslim Marriages Act, 1935, paving the way for a Uniform Civil Code(UCC).
- Muslim marriages and divorces to be registered under Special Marriage Act, discontinuing use of the repealed Act.
- District commissioners to take custody of registration records from Muslim marriage registrars.
- Compensation of Rs. 2 lakh provided to each registrar for rehabilitation post-repeal.
- This move marks another significant step towards prohibiting child marriages in Assam.”
