ICJ Declares Israel's Occupation of Palestinian Territories Illegal
On 19th July, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel's occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem as violation of international law, urging an end to its presence in Palestinian territories.
Historical Context
- Israel’s Occupation: Israel has occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the Six-Day War in 1967, previously under Jordanian control.
- Occupation Definition: According to the 1907 Hague Convention, occupation is temporary and does not transfer sovereignty to the occupying power.
- UN General Assembly Resolution: In December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) sought the ICJ's opinion on Israel’s actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
