Russia withdraws from Black Sea Grain Initiative
On 17th July, 2023, Russia announced its withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Deal.
About Black Sea Grain Deal
- The Black Sea grain deal was established in July, 2022, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- It aimed to address the disruption caused to Ukraine's grain exports, as it is one of the world's largest exporters of food grains like wheat and corn.
- The initiative was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey.
- Under the deal, cargo ships were allowed safe passage to and from three Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea, subject to inspection to ensure they were not carrying arms.
