Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2020
- In February 2020, the Union Cabinet approved the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2020.
- It allows any “willing” woman to be a surrogate mother and proposes that Indian single women (only widows or divorcees between the age of 35 and 45 years) can also benefit from its provisions, besides infertile Indian couples.
- It waived off the need for a five-year waiting period for childless married couples if there is a medical certificate that shows that they cannot possibly conceive.
- It prohibits commercial surrogacy including sale and purchase of human embryo and gametes, but altruistic surrogacy is allowed on fulfilment of certain conditions.
