Star tortoise, otters get Higher Protection at CITES
India’s proposal to upgrade the protection of star tortoises (Geochelone elegans), the smooth-coatedotter (Lutrogaleperspicillata) and small-clawed otters (Anoyxcinereus) in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species on Wild Fauna and Flora) has been approved.
Indian Star Tortoise
- It is a threatened species of tortoise found in dry areas and scrub forest in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
- It is mostly herbivorous and feeds on grasses, fallen fruit, flowers, and leaves of succulent plants, but occasionally eats carrion.
Smooth-coated Otter
