Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019

  • Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) stands bifurcated from October 31, 2019 as J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019 comes into effect. This reduces the number of states in India to 28 while increases the total Union Territories (UTs) to nine. This is for the first time in the history of India that a state was converted into two UTs.
  • The UTs of J&K and Ladakh will be headed by their respective Lieutenant Governors who will be appointed by the President of India.
  • The Ranbir Penal Code, Constitution and Legislative Council of J&K stand abolished.
