Election Commission of India

  • In January 2020, Election Commission of India (ECI) made a proposition before the Supreme Court of India to ask political parties to not give ticket to those with criminal antecedents.
  • ECI is a constitutional body provided under Article 324 of the Constitution of India. It was established in accordance with the Constitution on 25th January 1950.
  • It has the powers of superintendence, direction and conduct of elections to the Parliament, the state legislatures, the office of the President and the office of the Vice-President.
  • The President appoints Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
