​Two New Species of Cannibal Spiders Discovered

Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata have recently identified two new species of cannibal spiders in the southern Western Ghats.

  • The newly identified species, Mimetus spinatus and Mimetus parvulus, belong to the genus Mimetus and family Mimetidae, commonly known as pirate or cannibal spiders due to their unique predatory behaviour.
  • Mimetus spinatus was found in Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, while Mimetus parvulus was spotted in the Ernakulam district of Kerala.
  • The number of Mimetus spider species in India has now increased to three.
