South America Faces Record-Breaking Wildfires
Recent analysis of satellite data by Brazil’s space research agency, Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), identified 346,112 fire hotspots so far this year in all 13 countries of South America, surpassing the previous record of 345,322 hotspots in 2007.
- The Amazon rainforest, along with parts of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia, is particularly affected.
Contributing Factors to the Wildfires
- Climate Change: Unprecedented wildfires are deeply linked to climate change, with conditions becoming increasingly severe due to rising temperatures and prolonged drought.
