Scientists Discover Thriving Life Beneath Antarctic Ice Shelf
On 20th March 2025, scientists announced surprising discoveries of diverse marine life beneath the Antarctic ice shelf, following the break-off of a massive iceberg. The findings challenge previous assumptions about deep-sea ecosystems.
Newly Exposed Seafloor Reveals Hidden Ecosystems
- On 13th January 2025, the 510-sq-km A-84 iceberg broke away from the George VI Ice Shelf, uncovering a previously inaccessible underwater world.
- A remotely operated submersible explored the seafloor, capturing images and collecting specimens.
- The mission was part of Challenger 150, a UNESCO-endorsed global deep-sea research initiative.
- Scientists found a thriving ecosystem at depths of up to 1,300 meters, including large corals, sponges, icefish, octopi, ....
