What are the major challenges in the social and economic empowerment of tribal communities of Uttar Pradesh?

Answer: Tribal communities (Scheduled Tribes) in Uttar Pradesh constitute only 0.57% (Census 2011) of the total population of the state. The major tribes among them are Bhotiya, Tharu, Boksa, Jaunsari and Raji.

The major challenges in social and economic empowerment are:

Lack of Education

  • Literacy Rate: The tribal literacy rate in Uttar Pradesh is only 55.7%.
  • Lack of availability of schools, shortage of teachers and lack of education in mother tongue hinders the learning process.
  • Education of Girls: Problems like gender discrimination and child marriage hinder the education of tribal girls.
