Indus Waters Treaty: Neutral Expert's Affirmation
On 7th January 2025, the Neutral Expert (NE) appointed under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) affirmed his competence to resolve technical disputes between India and Pakistan over hydroelectric projects on treaty-governed rivers.
Key Developments
- Neutral Expert’s Decision: Michel Lino, appointed by the World Bank, ruled that all seven technical disputes over India’s Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects fall under his jurisdiction.
- India’s Response: India welcomed the decision, asserting that the NE’s ruling validates its interpretation of the treaty’s dispute resolution process.
- Pakistan’s Stance: Islamabad, yet to respond, previously pushed for a parallel Court of Arbitration (CoA), which India refuses to recognize.
