​2024 Warmest Year on Record for India and the World

On 1st January 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 2024 was the warmest year for India, with a temperature rise of 0.65°C above the 1991-2020 average.

  • •The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) also confirmed 2024 as the hottest year globally, with temperatures exceeding pre-industrial levels by 1.5°C.

India’s Warming Compared to Global Trends

  • India’s land surface warming (1.2°C) is lower than the global land average (>1.6°C).
  • Global land surface warming exceeded 1.6°C, while ocean warming remained around 0.9°C.
  • Land areas warm faster than oceans due to lower heat retention capacity.
