India Appointed First Vice-Chair of UN FAO Fisheries Committee
Recently, India assumed the role of the first vice-chair of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Fisheries’ (COFI) Sub-Committee on Fisheries Management, amid global concerns over China's fishing practices.
- This historic appointment occurs amid increasing international scrutiny of China's illegal fishing practices in global waters and violation of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
- A report reveals that between 2019 and 2021, China engaged in over 3 million hours of fishing in the EEZs of 80+ countries and spent nearly 10 million hours outside its own EEZ.
