Global Coral Bleaching Event Confirmed
On 15th April, 2024, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coral Reef Watch (CRW) and the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) confirmed the fourth global mass coral bleaching event in 2023-2024, marking the second occurrence in the last decade.
Understanding Coral Bleaching
- Hard corals, forming the basis of intricate ecosystems like coral reefs, face bleaching when symbiotic algae on their shells perish due to rising sea temperatures, rendering them vulnerable to diseases and death.
- Coral bleaching not only jeopardizes the survival of corals but also disrupts entire marine ecosystems, affecting millions of species reliant on reefs for sustenance and shelter.
