Minorities In India
- The Supreme Court recently asked the National Commission for Minorities to take a decision on a plea seeking guidelines for defining the term ‘minority’ and for their identification State-wise.
- The Public Interest Litigation sought minority status for Hindus in Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, J&K, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Punjab.
- The Union Government has notified currently six religious communities, namely Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians (Parsis) and Jains as minority communities.
- National Commission for Minorities which was set up under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, is a quasi-judicial body with powers of a civil court.
