Norway, Ireland and Spain Formally Recognize a Palestinian State

On 28th May, 2024, Norway, Ireland, and Spain formally recognized Palestine as a state, marking the first instance of Western European countries making such a commitment.

What Does State Recognition Mean?

  • Montevideo Convention Criteria: The Montevideo Convention (1933) outlines four criteria for statehood: a permanent population, defined territory, government, and the capacity to enter relations with other states.
  • UN Membership: To join the UN, a state must be peace-loving, accept UN Charter obligations, and be willing and able to fulfil these obligations. Admission requires a two-thirds majority in the UN General Assembly, following a recommendation from the Security Council (UNSC).
