Half of the World's Rangelands Degraded: UNCCD Report
On 21st May, 2024, a new report, titled ‘Global Land Outlook Thematic Report on Rangelands and Pastoralists’ was released by the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD).
The report reveals that around 50% of the world's rangelands are degraded and in need of policy support, with communities dependent on them requiring focused assistance.
What are rangelands and what is their importance?
- Definition: Rangelands are natural or semi-natural ecosystems grazed by livestock or wild animals, comprising grasses, shrubs, bushes, open forests, and agroforestry systems. They are influenced by climate factors like rainfall and temperature.
