Japan's Ogasawara Island

  • A new island emerged near Japan's Ogasawara Island chain after an undersea volcano erupted in late October 2023.
  • The unnamed island, about 100 meters in diameter, resulted from phreatomagmatic eruptions, where magma interacting with seawater produces explosive bursts of steam and ash.
  • Eruptions occurred 1 kilometer off Iwoto island (formerly Iwo Jima) and continued for about 10 days, accumulating volcanic material above the sea surface.
  • The Ogasawara Island chain is a volcanic arc with over 30 islands; the most recent island formation occurred in 2013, merging with an existing one.
