Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Amendment) Bill 2022
On 21st November, 2022, the Central government introduced the draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Amendment) Bill, 2022 to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960.
The draft has been prepared by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Need
- The penalties under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 for cruelty against animals are simply not strict enough to truly deter crimes against animals.
- The law is not strictly enforced and contains several provisions which provide leeway through which liability can be escaped.
